Statement on USA Team Handball Membership for the 2023-24 Season

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BOSTON MA – Boston Team Handball (BTH) will be renewing their membership with USA Team Handball (USATH) for the 2023-24 season. BTH will not be exclusive to USATH nor will we prevent any BTH players/teams from participating in non-USATH sanctioned events for this season.

After careful analysis of the recently changed handball landscape from this past summer with the emergence of the US Handball Union (USHU), the BTH board has decided to renew its USATH membership – primarily for liability coverage, financial considerations of the overall competitions available, and keeping the status quo as the mentioned organizing bodies potentially come to some kind of consensus to bring the US-based handball community together.

Upon reviewing the competition schedule of USHU, we feel the club’s decision should be made in the best interest of both our men’s and women’s teams. More specifically, we considered how the USHU schedule could impact our players with limited resources. The club is focused on providing the most frequent and affordable competitions. Currently, the Northeast Team Handball League is providing both of those and will be the primary competition focus for all our teams. Should one of our teams or a selection of BTH players want to participate in a USHU-sanctioned tournament, the club supports the pursuit of more playing opportunities for players that are able to do afford to do so.

Boston Team Handball will continue to evaluate options in the future that will address coverage and affordability, as well as frequency and accessibility.
